Why Athletes and Active People Should Avoid Energy Drinks

A 14 year old girl died after drinking two 24-ounces Monster drink in a 24 hour period.  The parents are filing a wrongful death suit against monster.  Fox News reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating the reports of five deaths and one non-fatal heart attacked linked to the Monster brand energy drink. “Cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity.”  has been found to be cause of death.  A 24-ounce can of Monster Energy Drink supposedly has 240 mg of caffeine, approximately equivalent to seven cups of coffee.

The causes of these deaths have been linked to amounts of caffeine and unregulated use of herbal supplements.

“Research shows that beyond a brief caffeine high, there are actually no health benefits to energy drinks. In fact, the combination of different chemicals is likely to do more harm than good, especially for children.  Some of the unwelcome side effects of the drinks include elevated heart rates, hypertension, anxiety, headaches and interrupted sleep patterns. A recent study by the University of Miami suggests even more serious outcomes, such as heart palpitations, strokes and sudden death.”

Not only that, your teeth enamel are greatly affected with the "acid" that energy drinks give the body.  Your teeth enamel are damaged causing more cavities and decay.

"A  concern with energy drinks is that they are often marketed to athletes as a way to get a quick energy boost before a game or exercise session.  Since exercise already increases your heart rate and blood pressure, adding an energy drink into the mix has the potential to put unnecessary strain on your heart.  Caffeine is also a well-known diuretic, meaning that is causes people to lose water and thus become dehydrated.  Given that information, it seems rather counterintuitive to drink an energy drink while playing sports, when hydration is very important!
